DUBTRASH

A little while ago whilst compiling a track list for a Reggae Dubstep mix, I came across

Dubtrash, a 23 year old DJ and producer hailing from Ireland. He has spent the last few months creating reggae influenced dubstep tracks and is steadily picking up a strong fan base online. I was immediately hooked onto his different take on dubstep, and managed to ask him a few questions about life as a producer.

What got you into producing music and dubstep in particular?
‘I've always had a huge interest in music. As a young lad I used to play all those music making games for the Playstation (Music 2000 in particular). So that's where I began my producing. As for dubstep, it's only a recent thing. I love all different kinds of music, from House, Electro and Techno, to Metal and Hip-Hop, but I first heard dubstep roughly about two years ago. It was a set by Rusko called 'Bloc Mix’ that I got free with DJ Mag, and ever since then I've gotten more and more obsessed with it. It's all I listen to now!’

How long have you been producing for?
‘I started doing it seriously this year (2010) in May, and it was initially just an experiment to see what I could do. Me and my friends spent an entire college year not doing any work and we just sat around listening to dubstep. I wanted to see if I could make my own stuff.’

What software do you use to make your music?
‘At the moment I’m using Garageband for Mac, and Audacity. They’re great little programs, but I’m gonna upgrade to Reason soon. I also like record my own sounds for tracks, guitars, vocals and percussion.’

What are your thoughts on the tendency for dubstep producers creating mainly the 'filthiest drops'?
‘Ahhhh the good old 'filthy drop'. It can be so rewarding when you see people's faces after a good fat fucker of a drop haha. It has definitely become an integral part of dubstep now. Although for me personally, most of my own tracks don't have that 'filthy' edge, they tend to flow along with a chilled out reggae groove. So, I like to think that my music has a different approach to dubstep than most other producers out there.’

What gave you the idea to produce dubstep infused with Reggae and Islamic/Arabic samples?
‘I have always had an interest in original roots style dub music. I love it’s atmosphere. Dub was an instrumental sound that originated from Jamaica, what we often hear today in dubstep is a million miles away from that. Don’t get me wrong, that ain’t a bad thing, I love the filthy robotic stuff too, but I wanted to keep that old reggae style sound in my music. As for the Arabic stuff, I’m such a music nerd. I’m always interested in different styles of music from around the world. Arab music can be so beautiful and hypnotic sounding. I wanted to see if I could make that work within a dubstep structure.’

You seem to be getting a lot of support on-line, what do you think of websites, such as Soundcloud, as mediums for getting your music out there?
‘Yeah it’s been a great year for me so far. When you consider the short amount of time I have been producing, the support I am getting is quite phenomenal. Soundcloud has definitely helped me in getting noticed and gaining fans. There’s so many talented producers out there and Soundcloud provides a great way to hear what other people are doing to help push the scene forward. I would recommend anyone, and not just producers, fans too, to join up and find some themselves some great underground music.’

So Mr Joel Zimmerman aka Dead-Mow-5 or Deadmau5 if you prefer has been going on a bit about making some dubstep, and a completed track has finally landed.

At just under 10 minutes long, the track is built up beautifully with strong progressive house chords we've come to expect from Mr Mau5. Whilst the dub drop at the 5 minute mark isn't the most mind shattering, the vocals coupled with progressive sounds give a good indication of the variety we can expect from Deadmau5 in the future, and re-iterates his position at the forefront of electronic music.

These are two tracks that have a very epic sound/feel to them, a more stripped down approach from Boys Noize from the usual thrash electro blends melodic riffs making it easy on the ears and club friendly.

Okay, Squire of Gothos have been around for a while.. but it has been only recently that they have produced anything big enough for dubbleshift to post!
At a BPM of 137, both these tracks are a mixture of electro and dubstep.. perfect to mix between genres!!! I realise youth blood has been remixed many times, but I feel that this remix is bigger than both the Sharkslayer remix and the 12th Planet and Flinch remix.

It's all in the title... I noticed recently that some well known artists were putting out some Reggae infused Dubstep tracks and was immediately addicted. I eventually found some artists that actually specialise in Reggae Dubs, and was blown away by the vibe these guys were creating. The combination of the two definitely creates something unique and fresh and as a result I had to put together a Quick mix of some tracks i'm feeling at the moment.

The mix starts slightly heavier but quickly moves into these signature chilled out reggae sounds. Whether you're about to light up a fat spliff or just want to kick back and relax, I present to you:

Freeform Hardcore is a genre that I have only just heard. Immediately I realised that I'm going to be listening to this for a long time to come.. I just wish I heard it years ago.

I think a lot more people would listen to this if they knew where to find a good freeform mix. This problem has been solved for you.

Wet, Wet, Wet!

I stumbled across a mix on FAT. It really blew my mind.

Firstly, it isn't really a mix of the likes which you are used to. Most of the songs are barely mixed together.. this is one artist's playlist for a great store in Melbourne.

This is a creative blend of music. I highly recommend listening to the entire thing at once to fully appreciate it.

The songs are perfect for a Sunday, and the fact that he hasn't attempted to poorly mix between genres makes it even easier to listen to.

I have no tracklisting and I have no genre to classify it under.. but it mixes between experimental, hip-hop and shoegazing rock.

QUICK MIX SERIES

So today we bring you the first of the 'Quick Mix' series. Our aim here is not to create the most technically astounding, smooth transitioning mixes, but to quickly mash together some tracks that were feeling at the moment.

The mixes will be around 15-30 minutes long and under 30mb in most cases, and we should be putting them out every 1-2 weeks.

For the first edition of this series I've decided to throw together some new tracks from genre's that got me into mixing in the first place...
